The gates to the Naval arracks were finally closed on 31st March 1984. However, its legacy remains and its many historic dockyard and barrack buildings provide a warm welcome for residents and visitors alike.

The town developed around Chatham Dockyardand several Army barracks, together with 19th-century forts which provided a defensive shield for the dockyard. History. It was built on the site of a prison built in 1853 to house over 1,000 convicts, with the intention that they would be used to build the Dockyard extension. That was soon to change (although Deptford remained a dockyard for over three centuries). The ourt Martial Room is located on the upper floor at the rear of the Drill Hall. The Treasurer of the Navy's accounts of the King's Exchequer for the year 1544 identifies Deptford Dockyard near London as the dockyard that carried out all the major repairs to the king's ships that year. The dockyard and barracks finally closed in 1984 and the Royal Navy bid farewell to Chatham.
