Only one of these towers still remains, three storeys tall but badly ruined, measuring 20 feet by 35 feet (6 metres by 11 metres). Grade I listed, the house has been owned by the same family for 150 years and has a long and fascinating history. In the 1700's, a former pele tower was turned into a grand home, Hutton Hall.
These latter sites are all still occupied and appear at first glance to be just grand houses, belying their defensive history. For a holiday with a difference, Whitehall Pele Tower is a wonderfully atmospheric 14th-century Pele Tower providing a magnificent setting for a large family or group, perfectly placed for exploring the Lake District and Solway Coast. About 90 were built. Two of the larger lawns can be used for family games. This tower was originally the buttery and pantry, forming the service end of the castle. They were small stone buildings with walls from 3 to 10 feet thick, square or oblong in shape. The ruined, red sandstone Penrith Castle (in the public park) also began as a pele tower. The Pele Tower creates a totally unique holiday venue on four floors featuring spacious rooms with beams, sandstone walls and an original stone spiral staircase from top to bottom of the tower.
