The table below lists many of the tunnels under the River Thames in and near London, which, thanks largely to its underlying bed of clay, is one of the most tunnelled cities in the world.

We're not talking a London Underground tunnel that runs under the Thames either - these are tunnels you walk through.

There are two fully-pedestrianised foot tunnels linking key parts of London that are north and south of the river - one in Woolwich and one in Greenwich. They were speculating about underground passages soaked with sewage drippings and infested by rats.

From 1825 to 1843, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Thomas Cochrane had created the tunnelling technology to construct the Thames Tunnel, enabling the transport of people and goods under the river Thames and further connecting the two sides of the city.

This is about ⁄4 mile (1.2 km) north of Kemble parish church in southern Gloucestershire, near the town of Cirencester, in the Cotswolds. We’re busy constructing a 25km tunnel under London’s river that will prevent the tens of millions of tonnes of pollution that currently pollute the River Thames every year.
