Is this the same El?
Did Jacob build an altar and call out to a Canaanite god? The Canaanite god of the morning star. In the Torah Jacob builds an altar in Shechem and devotes it to El Elohe Yisrael (El the god of Israel). In column b you will find five entries for the word EL. However, biblical scholars have long understood that אל is also the proper name of the old chief god in the ancient Canaanite pantheon, El (or Il). Canaanite god, El. The name “Yisra-El”actually contains the theophoric (divine) element, El, which strongly implies that the people of Israel worshiped El during their formative period.

This name identifies God as the sovereign ruler of the universe. Eventually, of course, the name EL simply became a general word for 'God' in the Old Testament, and so it is found many times.

El was a generic name for 'god' but was especially used to distinguish the father of the gods as 'the god'. Aglibol, god of the moon and brother of Malakbel.
