The “dogs on leash” sign applies only to the parking lot, but you should keep dogs on leashes on until you’re past the viewpoint for the falls (that short stretch is very popular), even then make sure and keep control of your dogs so they don’t bother other hikers or bikers.
This is where we turned around, making our hike about 5 miles, 2.5 hours (with breaks at each waterfall). I would call it a moderate hike, but then again, I had a pretty good lunch in Bend and was weighted down with camera gear. The North Fork Trail carries you up the creek, and the crowds begin to wear off as you gradually climb higher. A half mile trail leads visitors up to the upper viewpoint, right next to the falls.
You could also add that additional mile and turn around at the Swampy Lakes Trail intersection instead, for a longer out-and-back hike with a couple more waterfalls to boot. I loved this hike! Don't stop at the Falls. It is one of the most amazing waterfalls near Bend, Oregon.Although this beautiful waterfall is the main reward of this amazing family-friendly hike, it is definitely not the only one you will find on the trail. It is 2.1 miles each direction, but up a raod, so easy.
